Guidance on how to Contribute

It is easy to contribute to this wiki! Simply log in, go to the relevant page, click on edit, preview your changes, and save. You can try this out by visiting the Sandbox - where you can practice editing without worrying.

Editing Basics

Adding text - simple editing

Although you can view without logging in, to edit a page you must first Log In.
Click Edit
To start editing, click the Edit this page (or just edit) link at the top of the relevant page. This brings you to the edit page where you can edit text easily. If you just want to experiment, please do so in the sandbox, not here.
Type your changes
You can just type your text. However, you can also insert links to other pages in the AidEffectiveness.org wiki, or to other websites, or upload files.
Summarize your changes
Write a short summary of the changes you have made to the page, to help others know what has been added or deleted.
Preview before saving
When you have finished your edits, click Show preview to see how your changes will look -- before you make them permanent. Repeat the edit/preview process until you are satisfied, then click Save page and your changes will be immediately applied to the article.
Make sure you add text or links to the correct page
For example, if you have information on a country's aid policies, visit Chapter 2 on Aid Harmonisation, Alignment and the Paris Declaration and if you have a contribution on aid tracking databases place it under Chapter 6 on Aid Tracking. If it is very detailed information on an individual database, go to the Home Page for that database (eg DAD or AMP).

Logging in

  • Any practitioner can obtain a user name and password. Simply click on the "log in" link the top right hand corner of the page.
  • If you have a user name and password, sign in. If not, then click on "Create Account". Here you create your unique username and choose your own password. Please create a username that is made up of your first name immediately followed by your surname (eg RupalLee). This helps others to know who is contributing to the community.

Adding bold or italics

You can make a word or phrase bold in two ways:

  • highlight the text with your mouse, then click on the "B" at the top left of the edit box.
  • insert three apostrophes (' ' ') at the beginning and the end of the text.

To italicise is almost the same:

  • highlight the text with your mouse, then click on the "I" at the top left of the edit box.
  • insert three apostrophes (' ') at the beginning and the end of the text.

Adding Links

You can add four kinds of links to a page on the AidEffectiveness.org wiki:

  1. Links to another website.
  2. Links to another page within this wiki.
  3. Links to document that you have uploaded.
  4. Links to an image that you have uploaded.

Links to another website

Single square brackets indicate links to external websites outside this wiki (AidEffectiveness.org).

What it looks like What you type

Three ways to link to external (non-wiki) sources:

  1. Bare URL: http://www.aidharmonization.org/ (bad style)
  2. Unnamed link: [1] (only used within article body for footnotes)
  3. Named link: Information on Aid Harmonisation and Alignment
  • Square brackets indicate an external link. Note the use of a space (not a pipe) to separate the URL from the link text in the "named" version.

external (non-wiki) sources:
# Bare URL:

Links to a page within AidEffectiveness.org

Double square brackets indicate links within this wiki (AidEffectiveness.org).

What it looks like What you type

See Chapter 6 for more information on AIMS.

  • This gives you a link to another chapter or sub-chapter in the AidEffectiveness.org wiki.
  • If the chapter name is several words, the spaces between the words are represented with an underscore. However, when making the link, just type it with spaces, don't put the underscores in.
  • The link above is to the URL http://aideffectiveness.org/index.php/AIMS, which is the AidEffectiveness.org chapter with the name "AIMS".
See Chapter 6 for more
information on AIMS.

See Chapter 6 for more information on Aid Information Management Systems.

  • Same target, different name.
  • This is a piped link.
  • The "piped" text must be placed first, then the text that will be displayed second.
See Chapter 6 for more information
on Aid Information Management Systems.

Links to a document you have uploaded

You must first upload a document before you can insert a link to it. See the section on uploading documents for guidance on how to do this.

What it looks like What you type

Two ways to link to an uploaded file:

  1. Bare link showing only the file name: Image:UNDP-2006-AIMSLessonsLearntV1.0.pdf (bad style)
  2. Named link giving description: AIMS lessons learned in Asia
  • Note the use of a pipe to separate the file name from the description.
  • The easiest way to ensure you have the right file name is to:
    • upload the file, and then copy the file name;
    • or to go to Special Pages (see bottom left), then File list, then locate and copy the file name.
  • Be sure to include the file extension (eg .doc or .pdf)
Two ways to link to an uploaded file:
# Bare link showing only the file
name: :Image:UNDP-2006-AIMSLessonsLearntV1.0.pdf
# Named link giving description: [[:Image:UNDP-2006
-AIMSLessonsLearntV1.0.pdf|AIMS lessons
learned in Asia]]

Links to an image you have uploaded

You must first upload an image before you can insert a link to it. See the section on uploading documents or images for guidance on how to do this.

Linking to an image is exactly the same as linking to a document, except that there are extra options available.

Only images that have been uploaded to Wikipedia can be used. To upload images, use the upload page. You can find the uploaded image on the image list.

  • Alternative text, used when a mouse hovers over the image or when the image is not loaded in a text-only browser, or when spoken aloud, is strongly encouraged.

  • To include links to images shown as links instead of drawn on the page, use a "media" link.

Uploading a document or image

  1. To upload a document or image, click on 'Upload file', which is found under 'toolbox' on the left side of the page towards the bottom.
  2. Click on browse and locate the file.
  3. Then give it a clear Destination filename. Please include the name of the country or institution, then the year, then a descriptive name: eg Cambodia-2006-CDCdatabase-UserGuide.doc
  4. Enter a short summary of the document (or image) indicating full title, year, institution, author. Note, if the summary is longer than 5 or 6 lines it may generate an error message.
  5. If you see a warning that the file is too long, you may still proceed and click Save File.
  6. Copy the full name of the file - eg Cambodia-2006-CDCdatabase-UserGuide.doc and then follow the guidance above on how to insert a link to this file.
  • Try to minimise the size of any file that you upload, for example by turning it into a pdf, and selecting the 'smallest file size' option when creating a pdf.
  • To find the correct file name at any time, you can click on 'Special pages' (see toolbox), and then 'File list', and then sort the files by name or date, etc. Then you can select and copy the file name, and follow the directions above to insert a link to the file.

Other Information

Searching

You can search for a word or phrase by typing it into the search box on the left side of the page. If you hit return or press Go (the same thing), it will take you directly to a page with that name if such a page exists. For example, if you type 'DAD' into the search box, it will take you directly to the sub-chapter with the name DAD.

If you enter a word or phrase and hit Search, then it will locate occurences of that word or phrase in any of the chapters or sub-chapters.

Note: Search operates only on words of 4 letters or more.

Correcting a fact or providing feedback

If you would like to correct a fact, then click edit and make the correction. Otherwise, you may write to RCB.Aid_Coordination@undp.or.th

Alternatively, you may flag a concern or make a comment on the Discussion or Talk pages. Every page in the wiki has a discussion page associated with it - simply click on the discussion tab at the top of the page.
